Uganda: Training Center for Youth in Masaka

Pioneering Work with a Training Cooperative

In Uganda, and particularly in Masaka, the country's third-largest city, the construction sector has been booming for several years. An end to this development is not in sight, especially as the population continues to grow. Housing for the majority of the population is built by countless small, often informal individual businesses whose technical and business management skills are often very limited. There is great potential for establishing new micro and small enterprises and for enhancing their technical and entrepreneurial skills.

With support from the GESTE Foundation, the training cooperative "Masaka Diocesan Cooperative" was founded, which can offer housing construction projects entirely from a single source. Together with the partner "Catholic Workers Movement" and its youth organization "Young Catholic Workers Movement," young people are to be trained in crafts and cooperative principles to provide them access to employment and counteract youth unemployment.
